Established in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought 3rd-level domain names remained active.
